The Catholic calendar of saints remembers a prominent Dominican religious figure today, November 3: Saint Martin de Porres. Saint Martin was born on December 9, 1579, in Lima, Peru, at a time when racial discrimination was a daily reality. From a young age, he showed deep devotion and compassion for the less fortunate, which led him to enter the Convent of Santo Domingo as a lay helper, since religious rules at the time prevented people of African descent from becoming full-fledged friars.
