Zaragoza upgrades its bike lanes: areas where work is already underway

Zaragoza is continuing to improve the safety of its cycling network with new maintenance, repainting and bike lane expansion works. The emergency plan launched by the city council in January has so far delivered 11 comprehensive improvement projects and renewed markings on 14 sections, as part of a strategy to fix damage and improve coexistence between cyclists, vehicles and pedestrians.

So far in 2026, the work carried out has covered 47,306 square metres of base coating and 58,454 linear metres of line repainting. A second package of measures is now underway, involving the renewal of more than 21,000 additional square metres of pavement and a further 26 kilometres of road markings.

The work is currently focused on Avenida del Séptimo Arte, where 6,000 square metres and 8,000 linear metres are being repainted. Avenida de Casablanca, Paseo de Colón and Calle Juan Bautista La Salle will follow. Once these works are completed, the annual total will reach 68,502 square metres of base coating and 85,154 linear metres of repainted lines.

MORE THAN TWO KILOMETRES OF NEW BIKE LANES

Environment and Mobility Councillor Tatiana Gaudes outlined the measures during the area's Plenary Commission, where she also reviewed the expansion of cycling infrastructure. The City Council and the Zaragoza Transport Consortium have built an additional 2,288 metres of bike lanes, including the second phase of Avenida de Navarra, with 503 metres.

Another 1.4 kilometres have been planned between Avenida de la Policía Local and Puerto Venecia, as well as between Avenida de Tiziano and Avenida de Puerto Venecia itself. Meanwhile, the Transport Consortium has built almost 1.8 kilometres this year, divided between the connection of Avenida Estudiantes with Mapica II and the section linking San Juan de Mozarrifar with the Transport City.

Gaudes defended the need to keep these routes in good condition because of the high number of daily users. She explained that the aim is to anticipate potential problems for cyclists, pedestrians and drivers by addressing points where potholes, damaged separators or damage caused by tree roots may appear.

ELEVEN COMPREHENSIVE PROJECTS AND DOZENS OF SECTIONS REVIEWED

The municipal programme has already carried out comprehensive work at locations including Avenida de Ranillas, Alcalde José Atarés, Ronda Ibón de Plan, Valle de Broto, Avenida de los Pirineos, Peña Oroel, Bielsa, Paseo Longares and Ronda de Boltaña. In addition, base coating and road markings have been renewed on 14 other sections across different parts of Zaragoza.

These include Paseo Echegaray, Tierno Galván, Velilla de Ebro, Balbino Orensanz, San Juan Bosco, Juan Pablo Bonet, Faustino Casamayor, Puente de Hierro, Avenida Puente del Pilar and Gómez Laguna. The emergency plan has also covered more than 100 points across the cycling network to identify and repair specific defects.

The City Council is allocating 320,000 euros this year to bike lane maintenance. The amount forms part of a 960,000-euro four-year contract, supplemented by an annual budget of 80,000 euros for repainting included in the maintenance of road signage. Municipal inspections will continue periodically to locate potholes, displaced separators and other elements that could affect safety.
