Aragonese Hunting Federation offers to help Zaragoza deal with wild boars in city streets

The Aragonese Hunting Federation (Farcaza) has offered Zaragoza City Council its help in managing wild animals that appear in the city’s streets and green spaces. The proposal follows the attention generated by a wild boar spotted on Zaragoza’s streets during the recent Pilar festivities.

The organization is proposing to take part in drawing up a municipal protocol for responding to emergencies and incidents caused by species such as wild boars in urban areas, parks and peri-urban zones. Its proposals include risk assessment, incident prevention and advice on capturing, containing and controlling animals, always within legally authorized procedures and with due regard for safety and animal welfare.

Farcaza is making its technical team available to the City Council, led by veterinarian and wildlife management specialist Nicolás Vicente Urbani Barrios. The Aragonese Hunting Federation points out that it has nearly 28,000 registered hunters and is Aragon’s second-largest sports federation by number of licenses.

CALLS TO TAKE PART IN 2027 EUROPEAN CAPITAL OF SPORT

It also notes that it has already contributed to a report on ticks, fleas and associated pathogens found in Mediterranean rabbits in Zaragoza and the surrounding area, prepared by the Public Health Service. The organization is also officially recognized as a collaborating entity of the regional administration on hunting matters and received the 2026 Aragon Environment Award.

Meanwhile, Farcaza has congratulated Zaragoza on its designation as the 2027 European Capital of Sport and offered to take part in organizing and promoting sports and educational activities within the program. The federation believes that hunting disciplines can help showcase the diversity of sport in Aragon and its links to the natural environment. It is therefore asking the City Council to consider including it both in the technical work on the wildlife protocol and in the coordination bodies for next year’s sporting activities.
