Aragon launches new strategies to strengthen reading and math in schools

Aragon’s Department of Education, Science and Universities is holding the first regional conference on improving reading and math skills in Aragon in Zaragoza this Tuesday. The event brings together more than 200 participants at the Ramón Pignatelli Student Residence, mainly coordinators from the Aralecto and Arcomat programs.

Specifically, those taking part include officials responsible for reading plans at the 92 schools involved in Aralecto and mathematics competency coordinators from another 92 schools implementing Arcomat. They are joined by representatives from various areas of education, including José Luis Ferrando, director general of Educational Policy, Organization, Equity and Training.

The initiative is based on the understanding that reading and mathematics are essential skills for understanding information, developing critical thinking and acquiring knowledge across all subject areas. The Education Department stresses that improving them requires planned intervention by schools, the involvement of teaching teams and strategies adapted to students’ needs.

PRACTICAL WORKSHOPS FOR PRIMARY AND SECONDARY EDUCATION

The event began with the keynote lecture "Igniting the Spark: Pedagogical Leadership to Transform Schools," delivered by Coral Elizondo Carmona. This was followed by specific sessions for Aralecto and Arcomat, focusing respectively on systematizing reading competency and updating stochastic education in the classroom.

The program also includes practical workshops for Primary and Secondary Education. In reading, participants work on reading plans, critical thinking, non-linguistic subject areas and the role of school libraries, while the mathematics sessions address problem-solving, stochastic thinking and proposals linking origami with the subject.

The participation of national specialists in language and mathematics teaching aims to provide teachers with new tools to update their knowledge, learn about methodologies and share experiences. The goal is to bring these strategies to schools and strengthen the pedagogical leadership of the coordinators of both programs.

The event is part of the national territorial cooperation programs aimed at strengthening reading and mathematical competency. Coordinator training is considered key to extending improvements across teaching teams, supporting school planning and promoting the continuity of initiatives designed to improve student learning.
