"Oliver Twist. The Musical" will arrive at Teatro Principal from December 23 to January 3, bringing Dickens' 1838 novel faithfully to the stage. The story follows a boy who reaches the heart of London in 1830 and is forced to survive in an environment where poverty and crime are part of everyday life. Along the way, he meets Hurón, a young man who leads him to Fagin's hideout, where a character takes in homeless children and teaches them to "make a living" through deception and theft.
The adaptation is by Pedro Víllora, while the music and musical direction are by Gerardo Gardelin. The production company describes Oliver Twist as its most ambitious project to date. The musical premiered at Madrid's Teatro La Latina in November last year and had around 100 performances, enjoying tremendous success with audiences. Zaragoza is its first stop after the Spanish capital.
Oliver Twist is also one of the most recognizable stories in international musical theater, ever since Lionel Bart premiered Oliver! in the West End in 1960. It ran for more than 2,600 performances before moving to Broadway and appearing on stages around the world.
