The Department of Environment and Tourism will allocate €211,981.82, including VAT, to build the Botero 2 and Las Hoyas check dams, located in ravines of the same name that drain into the Las Torcas ravine. The project is part of a plan drawn up in late 2023 by the Zaragoza Provincial Service to reduce the force and volume of water flowing through this channel during periods of intense rainfall.
UP TO NINE CHECK DAMS TO SLOW FLOOD FLOWS
The project includes the construction of nine check dams at various points along the Las Torcas ravine and its tributaries. Their purpose will be to slow flood flows, retain soil and other materials carried by the water, and reduce the amount of water that reaches downstream areas all at once during heavy rain. The aim is to protect Ateca’s urban area from flooding, as well as communities and infrastructure located downstream.
The construction of the check dams is part of a broader plan to restore the surrounding mountains and improve water management in the Las Torcas ravine basin. The strategy also includes reforestation in the area’s public forests. The goal is to restore, over the medium term, the vegetation destroyed by the fire and help the land retain rainwater, thereby regulating its flow into the ravines.
