Aragon Unifies Birth Preparation with a Common Guide for Primary Care Midwives

The Department of Health of the Government of Aragon has presented a new guide for primary care midwives to standardize recommendations on pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum care, breastfeeding and parenting. The aim is for pregnant women and their partners or companions to receive consistent training, regardless of which health center they visit.

The document, entitled the Education Program for Motherhood and Fatherhood in Birth and Child-Rearing in Aragon, was promoted by the Directorate-General for Care and Humanization. The initiative aims to reduce differences between existing programs, update their content and promote more equitable, evidence-based care.

Primary care midwives from Aragon took part in its development, together with other professionals, pregnant women and their companions. The work included analyzing programs that were already in operation, identifying needs and reviewing the proposals with professionals and organizations linked to motherhood and child-rearing.

TEN SESSIONS ON PREGNANCY, CHILDBIRTH AND PARENTING

The program is organized into eight two-hour in-person sessions and two online sessions, the latter available through the Aragon School of Health. The content covers the main stages of motherhood, from changes and care during pregnancy to childbirth, pain relief, birth plans, the postpartum period and newborn care.

The guide also addresses issues such as healthy parenting and breastfeeding, and includes practical exercises, situation analysis and group education activities. The methodology seeks to encourage the active participation of families and the exchange of experiences, while also taking into account gender perspectives, family diversity and different cultural contexts.

The implementation of the program will be accompanied by specific training for primary care midwives, particularly in the practical exercises and group education methodology outlined in the guide. The Department of Health also plans to acquire the materials needed to facilitate the activities at health centers.

With this new framework, the Government of Aragon aims to ensure that recommendations provided during pregnancy, childbirth and child-rearing are applied consistently throughout the autonomous community. The guide is intended to become a common reference for professionals and strengthen families' preparation for the various stages involved in the arrival and care of a baby.
