The intervention is being carried out in accordance with the relevant technical project drawn up by ESCYRA, with the aim of removing or minimizing the vandal graffiti without damaging the building’s original materials. Specifically, the work affects a total of 45 stone blocks on the sanctuary’s facade: 34 are replacement pieces, while the remaining 11 belong to an earlier construction phase. The latter are more vulnerable because of their state of conservation and the penetration of the paint into the surface.
This circumstance requires the cleaning procedures to be adapted to the characteristics of the different materials, with particular attention paid to the oldest stone blocks to prevent damage or alterations to the stone. The technical project includes testing and applying different treatment systems, including laser, chemical and mechanical techniques, depending on the characteristics of each surface and the materials’ response.
