Aragón reaches an average age of 45: pensions account for 22% of gross income

Aragón has an older population than the Spanish average, and pensions account for a larger share of income than in the country as a whole. The INE's 2024 Household Income Distribution Atlas puts Aragón's average age at 45, compared with 44 in Spain. When demographic data are cross-referenced with income sources, pensions represent 22% of the region's gross income, two percentage points above the national figure.

The Aragonese region ranks seventh among Spain's autonomous communities with the highest average age, and 22.4% of its population is aged 65 or over, compared with 20.7% in Spain. Ageing also increased compared with 2023: the average age rose by one tenth of a year, while the proportion of residents aged 65 or over grew from 22.2%.

This demographic structure coexists with an average net income of 16,356 euros per person per year, 408 euros above the Spanish average. Average incomes grew by 5.8% compared with 2023, when they stood at 15,457 euros. Aragón therefore records higher figures than the national average for both mean age and income per person.

PENSIONS ARE ARAGÓN'S SECOND-LARGEST SOURCE OF INCOME

Pensions are Aragón's second-largest source of gross income, behind wages. Their 22% contribution is equivalent to slightly more than one in every five euros of gross income, while in Spain they account for 20%.

Wages account for 60% of Aragón's gross income, the same proportion as in Spain as a whole. This breakdown shows where income comes from: the INE distinguishes between wages, pensions, unemployment benefits, other benefits and other income.

Although the average age is rising, the relative weight of pensions fell slightly, from 22.3% in 2023 to 22% in 2024. This change refers to their share of total gross income; on its own, it does not mean that the amount received from this source has decreased.

TERUEL HAS THE HIGHEST AVERAGE AGE AND THE LOWEST INCOME PER PERSON

The provincial comparison shows the clearest contrast. Teruel has Aragón's highest average age, at 46, and the lowest net income per person, at 15,364 euros a year. It is also the province where pensions carry the greatest weight: they generate 25.9% of gross income, more than a quarter of the total.

Zaragoza has the lowest average age of the three provinces, at 44.7, and the highest net income per person, at 16,551 euros. The difference compared with Teruel amounts to 1,187 euros per person per year. In Zaragoza province, pensions account for 21.5% of gross income.

Huesca occupies an intermediate position, with an average age of 45.4, net income of 16,090 euros per person and 22.1% of gross income coming from pensions. In all three provinces, a higher average age coincides with lower income per person and a greater share of income coming from pensions. This comparison describes territorial differences, although it does not show that age is the cause of their different income levels.
