Figueruelas gigafactory’s first local workers are already training in China

The future Figueruelas battery gigafactory is already training its first local professionals in China ahead of their arrival at the plant. Production and maintenance teams from Contemporary Star Energy (CSE), the joint venture between Stellantis and CATL, are receiving hands-on training at CATL’s facilities in Xiamen, where they are learning to work on industrial battery cell and module production lines.

The program allows locally hired workers to gain direct experience in an industrial-scale production environment before operations begin in Figueruelas. After an initial phase of familiarization with the facilities, teams and training program, CSE professionals have begun practical learning alongside CATL workers.

Manufacturing lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries requires specialized knowledge at different stages, including electrode production, cell assembly and formation. Their time in China will allow participants to gain first-hand knowledge of these processes and develop the skills needed for their future positions at the plant in Zaragoza.

TRAINING THE NEXT WORKERS IN ARAGON

When they return to Figueruelas, the professionals taking part in this first training program will share the knowledge they have acquired and help prepare the next workers who join CSE through local recruitment. The company is therefore seeking to develop the industrial talent and capabilities needed in Aragon to launch and operate the gigafactory.

The program is part of the company’s phased recruitment and training plan, which began on July 9, 2025, with the creation of the joint venture. The project is currently in its second phase, and subsequent hires will be made gradually depending on construction progress and staffing needs.

The stay in Xiamen also includes cultural activities shared by the CSE and CATL teams, with the aim of strengthening relationships between workers and reinforcing collaboration between the two companies.

The Figueruelas gigafactory will involve a planned investment of €4.1 billion and will have the capacity to produce up to 50 gigawatt-hours (GWh). The project aims to strengthen Europe’s electric vehicle battery value chain and contribute to the development of a competitive industrial ecosystem in Aragon. Once it reaches full production, the facility is expected to employ nearly 4,000 people.
