Zaragoza City Council puts out tender for treatment against pine processionary moth in schools and play areas

Zaragoza City Council aims to curb pine processionary moths in spaces where they could cause the greatest nuisance and pose risks to residents and animals. It has therefore put out to tender a contract worth nearly 18,150 euros to treat municipal pine trees located at schools, children’s areas and other sensitive sites, such as sports facilities. The goal is to reduce the pest’s presence before the stinging caterpillars become a problem for people using these areas.

The operation focuses particularly on areas where children and other vulnerable groups are present, as well as places frequented by animals. The processionary moth does not only affect the condition of trees: its larvae have stinging hairs that can cause reactions and discomfort to both people and pets. For this reason, the contract covers trees where the pest has already been detected or where there is a greater risk of infestation.

THE CONTRACT

The contract has a budget of 14,995.87 euros excluding VAT and 18,145 euros including taxes, and will last 60 days. Interested companies can submit their bids until November 6 at 1 p.m. This is a one-off operation that the City Council considers necessary to carry out at the right time to ensure the treatment is effective, without waiting for the new general maintenance contract for green areas to be awarded.

The intervention aims to reduce processionary moth populations and prevent the pest from spreading through urban trees, while minimizing risks in public-use areas. The presence of these caterpillars is a particular concern when they descend from pine trees and form their characteristic lines on the ground, where they can come into contact with children or dogs. The treatment aims to anticipate such situations and help keep municipal trees in good health.
