The new parking facility aims to improve the safety and working conditions of road transport professionals in a region where logistics plays a fundamental role. López welcomed the launch of the infrastructure, describing it as “a commitment to safety, business competitiveness and, above all, to the people who make our economy work every day”. He also congratulated the company on an initiative that benefits both Figueruelas and Aragon as a whole, as well as the road transport sector.
The minister recalled the strategic importance of logistics for Aragon's economy. The sector already accounts for 7.7% of regional GDP, generates more than 35,000 direct jobs and brings together more than 1,000 companies. These figures place Aragon among the major logistics hubs in southern Europe.
López also highlighted the fundamental role of road transport in connecting production centres, warehouses and logistics platforms with markets and end customers. “Logistics needs transport, and transport needs drivers who can access facilities that uphold the dignity of their profession, like this one,” he said.
THE DRIVER SHORTAGE, ONE OF THE TRANSPORT SECTOR'S BIGGEST CHALLENGES
The regional transport minister also addressed the shortage of professional drivers, one of the sector's main challenges. López stressed the need to improve working conditions, facilitate training and enhance the profession's standing in order to promote generational renewal. In this regard, he recalled that more than half a million drivers are currently needed in the European Union and that around 660,500 professionals will retire before 2030.
The minister explained that having safe, well-equipped parking facilities fitted with advanced technology helps protect drivers, their vehicles and their cargo. These facilities also improve transport workers' rest conditions and make the profession more attractive.
MORE YOUNG PEOPLE AND WOMEN IN ROAD TRANSPORT
López also stressed the need to attract more young people and women to the road transport sector. Women currently account for just 2% of professional drivers in Spain, a situation that underscores the importance of improving safety conditions. “Safety is also a tool for advancing equal opportunities,” he said.
The minister also emphasised the importance of cooperation between public authorities, companies and industry associations to ensure transport that is more modern, safer and more competitive.
