Cremations Fall in Zaragoza in 2026 but Remain the Preferred Funeral Option

The Zaragoza Funeral Home recorded 2,779 cremations between January and September 2026, 5.48% fewer than during the same period last year, when 2,940 services were recorded. According to Zaragoza City Council data, this funeral practice has moderated in recent months, although it continues to account for a majority of services compared with burials.

The evolution of cremations between January and September 2026 resulted in a total of 2,779 cremations, an average of 308 cremations per month during the year's first three quarters. This monthly average represents a 10.65% decrease compared with the monthly average recorded by the Zaragoza Funeral Home throughout 2025.

"In 2025, according to the detailed data provided by the Funeral Home, 4,147 cremations were carried out, representing an average of 345 cremations per month," Urban Planning Councillor Víctor Serrano said. These figures explain the 5.48% decrease, with 161 fewer services compared with the 2,940 cremation requests recorded between January and September 2025.

Despite this decline, cremations continue to account for the majority of funeral services. "It is clear that cremation continues to record a very high volume, accounting for 55.95% of services compared with 44.05% for burials," Councillor Serrano said. The ratio stands at 1.27 cremations for every burial, confirming the importance of this option in Zaragoza.

However, it should be remembered that cremation figures do not automatically correspond to burials or the depositing of ashes in the same cemetery, since many users choose to take the ashes outside the municipal facilities after the process at the funeral home.

CREMATIONS OVER THE YEARS

Cremation requests rose from 3,132 in 2018 and 3,326 in 2019 to a historic record of 4,798 requests in 2020. They remained above 4,000 services in 2021, with 4,157, and in 2022, with 4,357, before moderating to 3,815 in 2023 and 3,674 in 2024, ahead of the rebound in 2025.
