This represents a year-on-year increase of almost 40%, according to data from Zaragoza City Council. The upward trend in recent months marks a change compared with previous years. "Throughout 2025, Torrero Cemetery recorded a total of 2,144 burial requests (the interment of human remains) over the 12-month period, the lowest annual figure of the entire decade, slightly below the 2,149 burials in 2024 and the 2,166 recorded in 2023," said Víctor Serrano, councillor for Urban Planning.
"During the first nine full months of this year, from January to September 2026, Torrero Cemetery recorded 2,188 burial requests, 616 more burials than during the same period from January to September 2025, when 1,572 were recorded. This represents a year-on-year increase of 39.19%," Víctor Serrano highlighted.
Adding the 120 services recorded in the partial October 2026 update, the year-to-date total has already reached 2,308 burials. This exceeds the total for all 12 months of 2025 by 7.65%, or 164 burials, with more than two months still remaining before the end of the year. It also surpasses the full-year figures for 2024 and 2023.
243 BURIALS PER MONTH

Including the partial October figure, the average for the 10-month period stands at 230 burials per month. One of the most notable figures came in March, when 290 burials were recorded. This was the highest monthly figure in the historical series dating back to 2018.
January 2026 also saw high activity, with 274 burials, followed by February, with 255. At the other end of the scale, July was the month with the fewest burials during the first nine months of the year, with 220 operations.
