The new Medicine degree in Teruel is launching with 45 places affiliated with the University of Zaragoza, in addition to the 220 places in Zaragoza and 45 in Huesca. In total, Aragón has 310 public places for Medicine this academic year, alongside the 100 offered by San Jorge University, bringing the annual total to 410 places for the training of future doctors in the region.
During his visit to the new university facilities, Aragón President Jorge Azcón highlighted the effort made to increase the number of places available in medical training, recalling that in 2023 Aragón had 225 first-year places, compared with 410 today. Alongside the Medicine students, students at the Teruel School of Nursing also began the academic year this Monday and will share facilities inside the Obispo Polanco University Hospital.
Azcón also stressed that “this project addresses the need for more healthcare professionals in our system. Many municipalities in our autonomous community lack doctors, and in order to address this shortage, projects like this need to be launched.” In this regard, he said that the introduction of the Medicine degree would help both attract young talent and ensure that Aragón has the doctors it will need in the future
MEDICINE DEGREE FACILITIES
The facilities located in the new Obispo Polanco Hospital have five classrooms for lectures and clinical case analysis, as well as five other state-of-the-art teaching laboratories specializing in Physiology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Biology-Genetics and Histology-Anatomy. The center also includes a computer room and a dissection room for Anatomy practicals, which students will begin using in the second semester.
To launch the faculty, the Aragonese Health Service allocated more than 2.5 million euros to build the new Medicine and Nursing classroom building, while the Department of Education invested nearly 725,000 euros in its equipment.
The launch of the Medicine degree also coincided with the start of operations at the new Obispo Polanco University Hospital, which began operating last September 1. The new center has three times the floor space of the former hospital, increases the number of hospital beds and doubles the number of single rooms.
