Snow blankets Teruel and the Pyrenees as temperatures keep falling: Aragón’s coldest day of the week arrives

Winter is beginning to show its face in Aragón. The first snowfalls have already turned several mountain areas white, and this Wednesday will again be marked by cold weather, with subzero lows, frosts and moderate maximum temperatures in the region’s three provincial capitals. The State Meteorological Agency is forecasting a slight rise in temperatures on Thursday and Friday, before rain returns over the weekend.

Snow has already made an appearance at higher elevations. On Tuesday, the first snowfall was recorded at the base of several ski resorts in the Aragonese Pyrenees, with white landscapes in Astún, Candanchú, Formigal, Panticosa and Cerler. Snow also fell in parts of Teruel province, including Valdelinares.

The cold is also being felt away from the ski resorts. Bello recently recorded -3.9 degrees, Astún reached -1.9, and towns such as Calamocha, Cedrillas and Alhama de Aragón also fell below zero.

TERUEL TO DROP TO -3 DEGREES

Teruel will once again bear the brunt of the cold this Wednesday. Aemet is forecasting a low of -3 degrees and a high of 13 in the capital, with a chance of light precipitation during the second half of the day. Widespread light frosts, locally moderate, are also expected in the Teruel Iberian Mountains, with the snow level between 1,800 and 2,000 metres.

A slight recovery will arrive on Thursday, with temperatures ranging from 3 to 16 degrees, while Friday will see readings between 1 and 17. Instability will increase again over the weekend, with a 65% chance of precipitation on Saturday and highs of around 17 degrees.

ZARAGOZA TO REACH 16 DEGREES

Conditions in Zaragoza will also be decidedly autumnal this Wednesday, although temperatures will not fall below zero as they will in Teruel. Aemet is forecasting a low of 5 degrees and a high of 16, with generally lightly cloudy or clear skies for much of the day.

Temperatures will rise slightly to 18 degrees on Thursday, although the chance of rain will increase during the first half of the day. Friday will reach highs of 19 degrees before temperatures fall again to 15 degrees on Saturday, when Aemet is forecasting a 55% chance of precipitation.

HUESCA BETWEEN 4 AND 13 DEGREES

In Huesca, temperatures will range between 4 and 13 degrees this Wednesday, with cold conditions and skies becoming less cloudy as the day progresses.

The high will be 14 degrees on Thursday and will rise to 16 on Friday, but will fall back to 13 degrees on Saturday. Rain will also return, with a 40% chance on Thursday and a 70% chance on Saturday. The provincial snow level will be around 1,500-1,700 metres during precipitation events.
