Huesca-born Francisco Martínez Becerra crowned world maître d’hôtel champion in Japan

Aragon’s hospitality industry has received a new international accolade thanks to Francisco Martínez Becerra, a native of Sabiñánigo (Huesca), who was crowned world champion in the Table Service category at the Maîtres d’Hôtel World Championship, held this October in Tokyo, Japan. Horeca Zaragoza congratulated the Huesca-born professional on the achievement, which has placed Aragon in a leading international competition and highlighted the work of front-of-house professionals, a fundamental part of the restaurant industry.

The world title adds to a career marked by other professional distinctions. Martínez Becerra was already crowned Aragón maître champion and Spain’s flambéing champion in 2022. That same year, he also received the Young Maître distinction at the Pajarita Awards presented by the Association of Maîtres of Aragón. His victory in Japan represents new recognition of his mastery of service techniques and of a specialty that requires knowledge, precision and experience.

THE ROLE OF FRONT-OF-HOUSE PROFESSIONALS

Horeca Zaragoza said the award has helped raise the profile of a profession that, despite its importance, does not always receive the same recognition as the culinary sector. Maîtres and front-of-house teams play a fundamental role in direct customer service, from welcoming and advising guests to organizing service, presenting dishes and demonstrating knowledge of products.

Hospitality business owners have also highlighted the need to strengthen the prestige of front-of-house professions and attract new professionals to the sector. Technical training, gastronomic knowledge and customer service skills require specific preparation and have a direct influence on how customers assess establishments.

Growing interest in gastronomy has given chefs’ work greater visibility, but Horeca Zaragoza has stressed that a strong culinary offering also needs service to match. Coordination between the kitchen and front of house, advising diners and the ability to adapt to each customer’s needs are essential to guaranteeing a restaurant’s quality and setting it apart from the competition.
