“Addressing current needs and gathering input from healthcare professionals is essential to designing the future Royo Villanova University Hospital and defining the features, services and facilities that the new infrastructure should offer,” said Ángel Sanz. Further meetings with hospital and Primary Care services will be held in the coming days to involve them in this process.
During the meeting, the minister recalled that these discussions are beginning in parallel with the participation period launched by the Department at the plenary session of the Aragon Health Council held on September 3, to examine the various proposed locations for the new hospital. Sanz shared information about these proposals with the management team, as he did at the Council meeting.
THE OPTIONS
The four areas proposed to host the future hospital are the General Military Academy area, the San Gregorio area, the surroundings of Ronda de Boltaña and the Cogullada road area. All remain open to input received during the participation period, which will conclude at the end of October.
The meeting, which also included visits to various services and facilities, made it possible to assess the center’s current situation, the development of healthcare activity and the needs of the hospital infrastructure. The hospital and Primary Care managers provided the minister with information about the hospital’s current activity, the organizational challenges it faces and the needs identified in its existing facilities.
“It is essential to understand the reality of the current hospital and gather the needs and contributions of those who know its daily operation best, in order to move toward the best hospital possible: a leading-edge technological hospital capable of responding to healthcare needs in the coming decades,” the health minister said.
FROM THE CURRENT HOSPITAL TO THE HOSPITAL OF THE FUTURE
The current Royo Villanova University Hospital has 258 beds and six operating rooms and carries out an intensive healthcare activity, with more than 52,000 emergency visits a year, nearly 70,000 inpatient stays and more than 8,000 surgical procedures annually. The new facility will be designed to become a leading healthcare infrastructure for northern Zaragoza. It will be a general hospital that expands its range of services and specialties, prepared to serve both the current population and the city’s expected growth.
The future center will triple the floor space of the current hospital, increase the number of beds and include more operating rooms. It will also be designed with capacity for growth and adaptation, an option that the current facilities do not allow.
The new hospital will also be conceived as a leading digital, accessible, sustainable, university and research center, incorporating the most advanced technologies to address future healthcare challenges. The project will enable the development of modern, flexible infrastructure fully adapted to the needs of patients and professionals.
