Of the 122 deaths recorded last year, 92 occurred in Zaragoza province, while Huesca and Teruel recorded 15 each. Men continue to account for the majority of cases: 79 of those who died were male, compared with 43 women. The latest figures also come after a decade in which Aragon has consistently remained above 100 annual deaths from this cause.
Ana López, manager of Asapme Aragon, says the public measures introduced are beginning to produce results. “Although suicide rates have declined, which is very encouraging because it appears that the public measures being implemented are working, we cannot let our guard down because the suicide rate among older men is still very high,” she warns.
One of the areas the association is working on is tackling unwanted loneliness among older people, with the aim of activating protection protocols and systems. But concern also extends to the opposite end of the age spectrum. Asapme says it has recorded a 37% increase in demand for care related to mental health problems among children and adolescents, coming from both parents and the education community.
SUICIDES RISE AMONG YOUNG PEOPLE
The breakdown by age also reveals significant changes over the past decade. In 2025, the group with the highest number of deaths from suicide and self-inflicted injuries was people aged 55 to 59, with 18 cases, the highest figure in this age bracket over the past decade. However, the most striking increase is occurring in other age groups.
Compared with 2016, the largest increase is seen among young people aged 15 to 29, with deaths rising from 3 to 15, five times the number recorded a decade ago. The 30-to-39 age group has also grown significantly, while other age groups show a more stable trend or even slight declines.
GREATER DEMAND FOR MENTAL HEALTH CARE
“We are particularly concerned about the increase in mental health problems among children and adolescents,” López explains. The association provides care for conditions ranging from severe mental disorders, such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depression and personality disorders, to anxiety problems or depressive conditions linked, among other factors, to stress and the pace of life. According to the manager, this is compounded by current waiting times for psychological and psychiatric care in the public health system.
