Director General of Personnel Ana Eva Tejedor said Tuesday in the Cortes of Aragon that reducing temporary employment will be one of the priorities of the legislative term. The Education Department will study the implementation of a specific extraordinary quota to fill new posts, although the decision will not be made until after the national transfer competition for the 2026-2027 academic year.
That competition will be particularly important because teachers who obtained a post through the stabilization processes carried out in the various autonomous communities will be able to take part for the first time. The Aragonese government expects numerous teacher movements between regions and will therefore wait until May 2027 to determine which positions are actually vacant and decide what measures to adopt.
CANDIDATES LACKING IN SOME SUBJECT AREAS
One of the main changes will affect the lists of temporary teachers, whose regulations are now more than ten years old. The Education Department wants to adapt them to a situation in which some subject areas, such as Computer Science, Electricity and Electronics, are struggling to attract candidates for certain vacancies. During the past academic year, 24 list expansions were carried out, and another five have already been announced this year.
The review will also cover schools facing particular challenges and posts in rural areas. The options under consideration include awarding a higher score in the selection criteria to people who take certain positions or allowing stability of up to three consecutive years in some posts, with the aim of preventing certain schools from having to rebuild their staff year after year.
The Education Department also wants to reduce paperwork for teachers by expanding the procedures available through PADDOC, the platform used for processes related to teaching staff. Service offers for temporary teachers, transfer competitions and training leave have already been joined by secondment applications, with the aim of avoiding paperwork and speeding up procedures.
MORE SUPPORT STAFF TO ASSIST STUDENTS
Strengthening the staff who work directly with students is another key issue. Aragon began the 2026-2027 academic year with 820 special education assistants, 50 more than at the end of the previous academic year and 270 more than the 550 employed in 2022-2023. Most began work on the first day of classes, although around 60 positions initially remained unfilled and had to be offered again in a second call.
Another 40 temporary positions have also been added to the staffing of the eleven early childhood schools for children aged 0 to 3 operated by the Aragonese government, as well as to the early enrollment classrooms introduced in the region. According to the Education Department, all these positions had been filled when the academic year began.
