PSOE Remembers Francoism Victims in Ejea and Defends Democratic Memory Ahead of 29N

Ejea de los Caballeros commemorated victims of Francoism this Sunday, All Saints’ Day, with a tribute at the cemetery attended by PSOE Zaragoza Secretary-General Teresa Ladrero; PSOE candidate for the Congress of Deputies in Zaragoza Fernando Beltrán; and fellow candidates Marta Gracia and José Antonio Remón.

Ladrero explained that Ejea de los Caballeros has a historic responsibility that goes beyond the exhumations currently being carried out. "We must continue investigating, learning about what happened and explaining it to young people. Because seeing is learning. This tribute allows us to look to the future with pride and know that we are doing what we should," she said.

She also recalled that we are living through a "critical moment" in our country: "That is why it is so important that the Spanish Government is represented by people who defend the principles of justice and equality."

Along these lines, Beltrán recalled that some families have spent decades waiting for truth, justice and reparation. And while they continue to wait, "right-wing forces are repealing democratic memory laws and questioning the rights of the descendants of those exiled by Francoism."

"There can be no equivalence between those who defended democracy and those who destroyed it through a coup d’état. Nor do we want first- and second-class Spaniards. This is also what 29N is about: memory, equal rights and the democracy we want for our country," he added.

Beltrán addressed the families in attendance with a clear message: "We will not leave you alone. We will not give up on truth, justice or reparation. And we will not accept the denial or questioning of the principles and values on which our democracy rests."
