Since the end of the most critical phase of the emergency, IAA technicians have made several visits to the affected facilities and have worked with town councils and county authorities, as well as with Public Health, Civil Protection and the Ebro Hydrographic Confederation, to assess the situation of each water supply system and define the necessary measures.
The situation varies from one municipality to another. While material damage to infrastructure has been detected in some cases, others require treatment systems to be reinforced or continued monitoring of water quality.
One of the main measures will be the installation of continuous monitoring systems in 18 of the 20 affected settlements, as the other two already had this equipment. These systems will make it possible to monitor water quality parameters in real time and detect any incident more quickly, strengthening the response capacity of municipal authorities.
MEASURES IN THE AFFECTED MUNICIPALITIES
Among the planned measures, in Santa Cruz de la Serós, the Aragon Water Institute has defined the installation of a new drinking water treatment plant to strengthen guarantees regarding the quality of the water supply for the entire population.
In Atarés, where the fire damaged part of the intake pipeline, part of the pipeline will be replaced and its protection improved in the section that is not buried. In addition, the installation of a specific water treatment system is being studied. A new treatment facility is also planned in Arbués.
Subsequent inspections have confirmed that some elements initially considered to have been affected are in good condition, meaning that the measures can focus on strengthening water treatment.
In La Peña Estación, Triste and Yeste, the water supply will be reinforced by bringing an alternative well into service. This will provide an additional source of supply and reduce dependence on surface water intakes, which are more vulnerable to accidents and other catastrophic events.
Cleaning and disinfection work will also be carried out on the infrastructure in Centenero and Anzánigo. Work will likewise be undertaken on the Osia reservoir, which was damaged during firefighting operations. The repair of the affected facilities and a complete review of the infrastructure are planned to determine whether additional measures are necessary.
