Turia’s New Issue to Feature a Cervantes Prize Winner

The cultural magazine Turia’s new issue, distributed this November in Spain and other countries, features original texts by renowned writers. Among these prominent literary names is Luis Mateo Díez, the 2023 Cervantes Prize winner, regarded by critics and readers as a key figure in contemporary literature.

Another author who enjoys the favor of Spanish-speaking readers and scholars of Hispanic literature is Mexican writer Cristina Rivera Garza. A resident of the United States since 1989 and a candidate for the Nobel Prize in Literature on several occasions, she has received another major accolade: the Pulitzer Prize, which she won in 2024 for her book The Invincible Summer of Liliana. Turia now dedicates an extensive article to her, examining essential aspects of her creative career.

Written by Jorge Carrión, a writer and cultural critic, the piece is titled "The Forensic Literature of Cristina Rivera Garza." Its aim is to show how the author has been developing a body of work primarily based on archival research, as well as on a feminist approach that prioritizes victims over perpetrators.

The strong narrative section of Turia also draws on unpublished material by writers as distinguished and literary recognized as Marta Sanz (Madrid, 1967), regarded as one of the most successful voices of her generation. In addition to her notable and prolific career as a writer, with twenty-five books spanning various genres, she also holds a PhD in Philology.

Another unpublished narrative text is "The Art of Apiolar," by Ramón Acín Fanlo, a prominent Aragonese writer, essayist, literary critic and professor born in Piedrafita de Jaca (Huesca) in 1952. Throughout his career, he has established himself as one of the most active and committed figures in Aragon’s cultural and literary scene.

A ROSTER OF RIOJAN AUTHORS

It is worth highlighting that, as this issue is presented in Logroño on November 19, the magazine has chosen to include a large roster of Riojan authors in its contents. This look at the best writers from the autonomous community has made it possible to include, for example, unpublished works by Bernardo Sánchez Salas (Logroño, 1961), Óscar Soto Colás (Villamediana de Iregua, 1973) and Elvira Valgañón (Logroño, 1977).

Bernardo Sánchez Salas is a valued and veteran Turia contributor in La Rioja; he coordinated and presented our 2015 special issue on Azcona. He is a writer and professor, as well as one of the leading names in contemporary Riojan culture. Film director and writer José Luis Borau held him in high regard as the author of a collection of short stories titled “Sombras Saavedra.” The unpublished story the magazine now publishes is “a fable about cinema, based on real figures and footage.”

Óscar Soto Colás writes historical novels and, in 2016, won the Círculo de Lectores Novel Prize for his work "The Devil in Florence." He coordinates the Reino de Viguera Historical Novel Conference and was a founder of the Riojan Writers’ Association. Turia now publishes his unpublished story "The Last Assignment."

Elvira Valgañón is a writer, translator and professor. She holds degrees in Hispanic and English Philology from the University of La Rioja and has combined her creative work with contributions to media outlets such as Diario La Rioja and the translation of English-language literary works. In Turia’s new issue, she publishes an unpublished story titled "The Frogs."

Finally, the magazine is backing a new narrative voice: that of Teruel-born writer Héctor Montón Julve (Teruel, 2000), who holds degrees in Philosophy and in Music History and Science and Musical Technology from the Autonomous University of Madrid. His story is titled At Full Volume.
