Aragon’s cultural, historical and musical heritage has once again reached the pinnacle of the international scene. “Monasteries of Aragon,” a symphonic poem by composer and music director José Antonio Bellido Alcega, has received the Silver Medal – Outstanding Achievement at the prestigious 2026 Global Music Awards in California, in the Composition / Composer category.

A key factor in this international achievement was the joint assessment conducted by the North American jury, which examined both the score's compositional rigor and the live performance by the Sierra de Algairén Symphonic Band during the world premiere of the work at the iconic Veruela Monastery.

A HIGHLY PRESTIGIOUS INTERNATIONAL AWARD

The Global Music Awards (GMA) are considered one of the world's leading independent benchmarks for musical excellence. In previous editions, the same award has been given to ensembles and institutions of the stature of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO), the London Symphony Orchestra (LSO), the Spanish Radio and Television Symphony Orchestra (RTVE), and the municipal bands of Bilbao and Barcelona.

Their list of winners also includes work by renowned composers and conductors with international profiles, such as Óscar Navarro, Antón Alcalde and José Rafael Pascual Vilaplana, as well as leading ensembles and soloists such as Spanish Brass, Raúl Junquera, and the Barcelona Clarinet Players project with Paquito D'Rivera. Receiving this Silver Medal places Bellido's composition and the work of the Aragonese ensemble on a par with major international symphonic productions.

A MUSICAL JOURNEY THROUGH HISTORY AND THE LAND

The symphonic poem "Monasteries of Aragon" pays musical tribute to the region's rich monumental and spiritual heritage. Through carefully crafted descriptive language and rich orchestration for symphonic band, the work takes listeners through the architecture, symbolism and landscapes of these historic sites.
