The president of Saica Zaragoza’s works council, Ángel Avenea, described the dismissals as “completely unjustified”. He explained that one was disciplinary, while the other two stemmed from an alleged company restructuring about which, he said, the works council had received no information.
The two dismissals on organizational grounds affected female employees in the Purchasing Department. According to the works councils, the company links them to an efficiency plan whose details they do not know. Regarding the disciplinary dismissal, Avenea questioned the way it was carried out, although he avoided discussing the underlying reasons.
THE WORKS COUNCIL DENOUNCES THE COMPANY’S REFUSAL TO MEET
Avenea said the workers’ representatives had requested an urgent and extraordinary meeting to learn the reasons behind the decisions. However, he maintains that management rejected the request. “The company flatly refused even to meet with us—not to debate or discuss, but simply to inform us,” he said.
The works council president recalled that similar situations had occurred years ago, although nothing of the kind had happened for some time. The employee representatives are now questioning the reasons for the three dismissals and the lack of information. “We do not really know what this may be due to,” Avenea said.
