According to a Randstad survey of 5,700 professionals in Spain, 17.9% of workers in Aragon spend between 50% and 65% of their salary on rent or a mortgage, while 9.2% exceed that latter percentage. At the other end of the scale, only 20.5% keep this expense below a quarter of their income. Another 36.6% spend between 25% and 50%, while 15.8% prefer not to disclose how much they pay.
Despite this burden, Aragon is among the regions where the fewest workers spend more than half their salary on housing. According to the report, only the Basque Country records a lower percentage, at 24.6%. The Aragonese region is below areas such as the Canary Islands, where this situation affects 42.9% of employees, and Madrid, at 36.3%.
WOMEN AND YOUNG PEOPLE BEAR A HIGHER COST
National data shows that the effort required to pay for housing is greater among women: 36.8% spend more than half their salary on this expense, compared with 26.7% of men. By age group, the greatest burden is concentrated among workers aged 25 to 44, with 35.3% exceeding that threshold. Among those aged 45 and over, the percentage falls to 30.2%.
The survey also links the weight of housing costs to salary dissatisfaction and the need to seek additional income. Among those who say they are not at all satisfied with their salary, 54.9% spend more than half of it on housing. In addition, 45.7% of people with more than one job devote over 50% of their income to rent or a mortgage.
