Aragon gains ground in the tech sector: its key areas of strength

Aragon is gaining ground on Spain’s map of technology companies born from scientific research. The region has 26 active deep-tech spin-offs, representing 2.6% of the national total and placing it eighth among Spain’s autonomous communities, tied with Navarre. These findings come from the latest edition of the report ‘The Deep-Tech Spin-Off Ecosystem in Spain’, prepared by Mobile World Capital Barcelona and published in October 2026.
Aragon gains ground in the tech sector: its key areas of strength

Aragon’s presence in this sector has grown compared with recent years. In 2025, the region accounted for 2% of the national total, while the first edition of the study, published in 2024, identified 21 Aragonese companies. Although methodological differences between the reports mean that absolute figures should be interpreted cautiously, the data highlight the weight of Aragon’s scientific system in the creation of new technology companies.

UNIVERSITY OF ZARAGOZA CLIMBS FOUR PLACES IN THE NATIONAL RANKING

The University of Zaragoza now ranks ninth nationally among the institutions from which deep-tech spin-offs originate. According to the report, it accounts for 2.3% of the companies identified in Spain, equivalent to approximately 23 companies in weighted terms, based on the methodology used in the study.

The Aragonese institution has therefore improved by four places compared with 2025, when it ranked 13th with 1.7% of the total. In the first edition of the report, published in 2024, 18 companies linked to the University of Zaragoza were recorded. These figures reflect its growing role in transferring scientific knowledge to the business sector. Across Spain, 84% of deep-tech spin-offs originate in universities and research organisations, according to the 2026 report.

ARAGON STANDS OUT IN ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE, COMPUTING AND ADVANCED MATERIALS

Aragon shows above-average technological specialisation in Spain in several sectors. Specifically, Aragon has a specialisation index of 2.16 in materials, manufacturing and advanced industry, more than double the national average. It also stands out in chips, computing and artificial intelligence, with an index of 1.58, 58% above the Spanish average.

By area of activity, 50% of Aragonese spin-offs work in chips, computing and artificial intelligence, while 20% focus on materials and advanced industry. Another 20% operate in healthcare and biotechnology, and the remaining 10% focus on energy, climate and resources. This distribution reflects Aragon’s strengths in engineering, digital technologies and new materials, as well as the opportunities created by the relationship between scientific research and the region’s industrial capabilities.

TECHNOLOGY COMPANIES GENERATING HIGHLY SKILLED JOBS

Aragon is also among the autonomous communities that exceed the national average of workers per company, which stands at around 11 employees per spin-off. This indicator demonstrates these companies’ ability to create specialised jobs and develop activities linked to advanced technologies.

In Spain, the report counts 1,014 active deep-tech spin-offs, which generate approximately 11,500 jobs and estimated annual revenue of €1.132 billion. The trends recorded across the study’s three editions show the potential of Aragon’s scientific system to transform research results into new business activities.

Aragon’s and the University of Zaragoza’s position, together with their specialisation in advanced materials, industry, computing and artificial intelligence, points to areas that are relevant to the region’s technological development. The creation and growth of these companies offer opportunities to boost knowledge transfer, attract investment, generate highly skilled jobs and strengthen ties between universities, research centres and businesses, promoting the economic and social use of research carried out in Aragon.
