To make the arrival of such an airline more attractive, the authorities have planned a specific financial incentive. The first airline to decide to establish a permanent base in Zaragoza will receive an annual bonus of 375,000 euros, a measure intended to strengthen the stable presence of aircraft and operational capacity at the airport. The aim is for Zaragoza not to depend solely on occasional routes, but to have an airline with permanently based aircraft.
MULTI-MILLION-EURO INVESTMENT
The search for an airline to base aircraft in Zaragoza comes alongside a joint investment of 8.79 million euros to put 29 route packages out to tender. The Government of Aragon will contribute 5.86 million euros and Zaragoza City Council a further 2.93 million euros. Under the program, the airport would increase its regular routes from the current 12 to more than 30, with destinations such as Manchester, Prague, Budapest, Warsaw, Krakow, Sofia, Naples, Porto and Tangier, while also restoring connections such as Paris, Düsseldorf and Venice.
The new strategy also aims to turn the airport into a key hub for travel within a catchment area of 2.8 million people and facilitate the arrival of tourists, businesses and congresses. The tender specifications are expected to be published next week, with the award of the different packages planned for November and the goal of launching the new services on March 28, 2027.
