Changes will affect Pedro III el Grande, Asín y Palacios, Juan Pablo II, Condes de Aragón and Luis Bermejo. The new layout will be temporary and implemented with signs and removable elements so it can be modified if any of the measures do not work as planned.
PEDRO III EL GRANDE TO BECOME A NEW PEDESTRIAN STREET
The main change will take place on Pedro III el Grande, where a section will be pedestrianised during the pilot scheme. Parking will not be allowed on this street or in the "U"-shaped area next to Doctor Azúa during school days and hours.
Bicycles will be allowed to use this space. Private cars will be able to access it when there is no school activity, entering and leaving via Asín y Palacios and turning onto Santa Mónica.
ROUTE CHANGES FOR THREE BUS LINES: 35, 42 AND 53
Several bus stops will also be moved. The stop on Pedro III el Grande at Asín y Palacios, served by lines 35, 42 and 53, will be removed, as will the Asín y Palacios 8 stop, used by lines 35 and 53.
The new stop will be on Condes de Aragón, next to Doctor Azúa School, and will serve lines 35, 42 and 53. There will also be a space reserved for the school bus next to it on days when the school is open.
WHERE WILL PARKING BE AVAILABLE?
The traffic reorganisation will create new parking spaces. On the final section of Juan Pablo II, only one traffic lane will remain and new spaces will be added. More parking spaces will also be created near Aragonia.
The layout on Condes de Aragón will also change. Between Juan Pablo II and Luis Bermejo, the street will operate in both directions and parking spaces will be reorganised. In other sections, parking will be removed to preserve the space needed for bus and taxi stops.
Between Pedro III el Grande and Vía Hispanidad, angled parking facing the opposite direction will be introduced next to the schools. There will also be parallel parking next to the José Castán Tobeñas walkway, while the lane next to the health centre's service road will be removed.
A NEW PLAZA AND A "KISS AND GO" ZONE FOR DROPPING OFF CHILDREN
The project also includes a new public square next to Pedro IV el Ceremonioso. The aim is to recover space for pedestrian use as part of the reorganisation of the area.
On Asín y Palacios, next to the basketball court at CEIP Cesáreo Alierta, a Kiss and Go zone will be created. It is intended to allow families to stop briefly to drop off or pick up schoolchildren.
HOW TO ACCESS SANTA MÓNICA CHURCH
Permanent access to Santa Mónica Church will be provided, allowing people to reach the speed bump from Asín y Palacios even with the new layout on Pedro III el Grande.
PILOT SCHEME: AFTER TWO MONTHS, THE CITY WILL ASSESS WHETHER THE CHANGES SHOULD REMAIN
During the month and a half the trial lasts, Zaragoza City Council will measure traffic, travel on foot and by bicycle, bus operations, access to schools and use of the new spaces. The project is part of the European Elaborator project, involving 12 cities and 38 partners. The Aragonese capital has received 80,000 euros in Horizon Europe funding to carry out this initiative.
Once the trial ends, officials will decide which measures work and which should be modified or removed. If the results are positive, the new layout could be retained and also serve as a model for action in other school zones in Zaragoza.
