The work will focus on the southern side and upper section of the fountain, which will remain one of the square’s main features. The aim is to transform the existing washed-concrete panel into a more colourful and natural green wall in an area that currently has virtually no vegetation.
A NEW GREEN CORNER IN THE HISTORIC CENTRE
Teruel Mayor Emma Buj explained that the project is part of the 2026 municipal budget and already has funding. Following its approval by the Governing Board, the next step will be to put the works out to tender, which is expected to happen in the coming weeks.
Buj said the project forms part of the City Council’s intention to “renaturalise the historic centre”. “Teruel is a green city in many of its neighbourhoods, but the historic centre is harsh,” she said. In the case of Plaza de los Amantes, she noted that concrete and brick currently predominate, meaning the new garden will introduce “a small corner of nature”.
The garden will feature a lightweight structure anchored to the wall, hydroponic growing panels and an automated system for irrigation, humidity, temperature and fertilisation control. The species will be selected with Teruel’s climate in mind, combining different colours, textures and aromatic plants.
THE FOUNTAIN WILL ALSO BE RENOVATED
The project will not be limited to the vertical garden. It also includes improvements to the ornamental fountain, including cleaning the ceramic mural, replacing damaged pieces and renewing the systems that distribute the sheet of water.
In addition, mechanisms will be installed to prevent freezing, along with descaling and disinfection systems that will allow the fountain to remain operational year-round. The work will preserve the travertine stone coping and replace any paving that may be affected during construction.
