The current network consists of 22 pools spread across the different districts and rural neighborhoods. This infrastructure has taken on particular importance this summer due to the high temperatures, allowing the city to meet especially strong demand during periods of extreme heat. In fact, Zaragoza is already close to one million visits to its municipal pools as the season draws to a close, surpassing last year’s figures.
Mayor Natalia Chueca highlighted the scale of this network precisely this week during a visit to the CDM Sur construction site and noted that the new facility will further strengthen Zaragoza’s position. The sports center, whose pools are scheduled to open in late spring 2027, will be one of two new additions that will bring the city’s number of municipal summer pools to 24.
HEAT WAVES HAVE SENT DEMAND AMONG ZARAGOZA RESIDENTS SOARING
The summer of 2026 has once again shown the extent to which pools have become a key resource when temperatures soar. This is especially true because Zaragoza City Council also has a specific mechanism for such episodes. When the Civil Protection Emergency Plan for high temperatures is activated, admission prices to the pools are significantly reduced to encourage access.
For now, the regular season ended last Sunday, August 30, although four facilities (Actur, Alberto Maestro, Delicias and La Granja) will remain open until this Sunday, September 6. After that, Zaragoza will turn its attention to the coming summers with a network that will grow to 24 pools and, according to the city’s forecast, allow it to lead Spain in public pools per capita.
