This was announced by Octavio López, the Government of Aragon’s councillor for Housing, Public Works, Logistics and Territorial Cohesion and president of the Transpyrenean Foundation, following a meeting of the organisation’s Board of Trustees.
EIGHT ALLEGATIONS REGARDING THE CORRIDOR
The allegations, set out in a 29-page document, argue that the Teruel-Sagunto section cannot be analysed as an isolated railway project, but rather as an essential link connecting the Cantabrian and Mediterranean regions. “It is clear that the proposed solution does not guarantee sufficient performance to meet present and future needs,” Octavio López said after the meeting of the Foundation’s Board of Trustees.
The document contains a total of eight allegations. They state that the current plan proposes insufficient capacity, speed and robustness for a strategic corridor. It points out that all seven alternatives involve single-track lines, with maximum speeds of 140 km/h and just 100 km/h on the Teruel bypass.
The allegations also denounce the fact that adapting the existing line would not eliminate its main limitations, including gradients of up to 21% and 23%. They also criticise the profitability analysis for containing an “underestimated demand” and for failing to consider future increases in traffic and trade.
For this reason, the Transpyrenean Foundation is calling for a new study covering an electrified double-track railway infrastructure suitable for mixed passenger and freight traffic, integrated into the Trans-European Transport Network and sized to meet future needs.
