The fire alert was received at 5:53 p.m. on the Juslibol road, within the boundaries of the rural district of Alfocea. A command and communications unit, a light urban fire engine and a heavy water tanker from Zaragoza Fire and Rescue Services were deployed to the scene. Firefighters needed more than an hour and a half to bring the flames under control. The fire started in the locomotive cab and quickly spread through the train's two carriages.

The fire left the locomotive and carriages virtually reduced to their metal frames, while an intense column of black smoke could be seen from various parts of Zaragoza. The cause of the fire has yet to be determined, although the Friends of the Galacho Platform maintains that the incident highlights the risks it has been reporting for some time in the area. The group is calling for immediate action to prevent a tragedy of even greater proportions.
Following the fire, the organization is demanding the complete removal of the polluting waste that, it says, is scattered throughout the area. It is also calling for an immediate solution so that schoolchildren and families can safely return to the Juslibol Galacho this autumn.
