The measure will remain in place until October 30 and will also ban parking along this section and in the adjoining U-shaped area next to the school during school days and hours. Bicycles will be allowed to enter throughout the pilot period, while private vehicles may only access the area on non-school days and must do so from Asín y Palacios, turning onto Santa Mónica.
The change is part of the European Elaborator project, involving 12 cities and 38 partners, and aims to determine whether a more ambitious reorganization of public space can improve schoolchildren's safety. "We want to be ambitious with this pilot and reorganize the spaces," said Mobility and Environment Councillor Tatiana Gaudes, who stressed that the parking spaces removed will be offset by new spaces in the surrounding area.
MORE CHANGES IN THE AREA, INCLUDING BUS ROUTES
The transformation of Pedro III el Grande will entail changes on Luis Bermejo, Juan Pablo II, Asín y Palacios and Condes de Aragón. The locations of stops for routes 35, 42 and 53 will also change, and a dedicated area for school transport will be provided next to Doctor Azúa.
The City Council will use tactical and reversible urban-planning elements, such as signs, barriers and removable features, to implement the changes quickly and modify or remove them if necessary. During the month-and-a-half pilot, traffic, road safety, public transport, access to the school and users' behavior will be analyzed.
The aim is to assess the results and then decide whether the measures should be made permanent. Gaudes also explained that, if the experience is positive, this model could later be extended to other school areas in Zaragoza.
