The measure is set out in an order issued by Fraga Mayor Ignacio Gramún, aimed at protecting the deer population during these weeks. The notice also states that only authorized vehicle lighting may be used, banning flashlights, spotlights and/or devices that dazzle the animals.
RESPECT FOR ANIMALS
Gramún said that “the rut is one of the most unique natural spectacles we can enjoy in our surroundings, but we must always do so respectfully and avoid any behavior that could disturb the animals.” In this regard, he recalled that “it is everyone’s responsibility to preserve our natural heritage and ensure that the rut can take place normally.”
The measure complies with Law 42/2007 of December 13 on Natural Heritage and Biodiversity, which states in Article 54, Section 5, that it is prohibited to “intentionally kill, harm, disturb or unsettle wild animals, regardless of the method used or the stage of their biological cycle.”
In addition, Article 41 of Aragon’s Hunting Law 1/2015 prohibits “the use of mirrors, headlights, flashlights and other artificial light sources,” which is considered a serious offense under Article 82, Section 18, of the law.
