A Former Matarraña Farmhouse Joins the Michelin Keys Selection, Surrounded by Olive Groves and Nature

Michelin has once again turned its attention to Aragon, although this time not for its restaurants or kitchens. The French guide has just presented the 2026 edition of its Michelin Keys, the distinction recognizing the world's most outstanding accommodations. Spain adds five new hotels to the selection this year, including one in Aragon. With these additions, the national list reaches 122 recognized establishments, three of them in Aragon.

The new Aragonese addition is in Matarraña. La Torre del Visco has just joined the selection with one Michelin Key, entering the prestigious guide's hotel map for the first time. The property is located in La Portellada, very close to Valderrobres, in a former farmhouse surrounded by orchards, olive groves and nature. Its offering revolves around tranquility, its connection with the land and local produce. Michelin was already familiar with the property for its gastronomic offering, which has been recognized with a Green Star for its commitment to sustainability.

LA TORRE DEL VISCO, A 15TH-CENTURY FARMHOUSE IN THE HEART OF MATARRAÑA

The new Aragonese addition to the Michelin Keys has more than three decades of history behind it. La Torre del Visco occupies a fortified 15th-century farmhouse, restored by Piers and Jemma Markham after they left their careers in publishing in Madrid. The property is located on a private estate of more than 90 hectares in Matarraña, surrounded by forests, gardens, olive groves and an organic vegetable garden.

The hotel belongs to Relais & Châteaux and has just 16 rooms and suites, each decorated differently and offering views of the gardens, the estate or the landscape of this area of Teruel. Its small size is part of an offering focused on tranquility and contact with the surroundings, with nature as one of the main elements of the stay.

Gastronomy is another of its pillars. Much of the produce used in the kitchen comes from its own estate, which has an organic vegetable garden and around 2,000 olive trees, while also working with artisan producers from the area. The menus change according to the season and what is harvested each day, a philosophy connected to the land and sustainability that runs through both the restaurant and the hotel itself.

ARAGON'S OTHER HOTELS WITH MICHELIN KEYS

The Michelin Keys are the hotel equivalent of the Stars and are awarded in three categories, from one to three, based on aspects such as design, service, personality and the experience offered by the accommodation. Aragon is represented at all three levels: La Torre del Visco has one Key, Canfranc Estación has two and Torre del Marqués has three, the highest distinction.

Torre del Marqués, among Spain's five three-Key hotels

The highest distinction takes us to Monroyo, in the Teruel county of Matarraña. There stands Torre del Marqués Hotel Spa & Winery, housed in an 18th-century historic building and surrounded by olive groves and vineyards.

With just 18 rooms, the property favors a model far removed from large hotel complexes, in which the landscape and traditional architecture play an important role. Its offering combines the restoration of the building with contemporary luxury and the rural character of this area of Teruel.

Torre del Marqués retains its three Keys in 2026 and remains part of a particularly exclusive group: only five establishments in Spain have the highest category. It is also the only Aragonese hotel to have reached this level.

Canfranc Estación, two Keys in a historic Pyrenean building

The other Aragonese property already included in the selection is in the Huesca Pyrenees. Canfranc Estación, a Royal Hideaway Hotel, retains its two Keys in one of Aragon's most recognizable buildings: the former Canfranc International Railway Station.

The historic railway terminal, inaugurated in 1928, has undergone a profound transformation to become a luxury hotel that preserves much of the original building's architectural prominence. The restoration of this heritage site and its location in the heart of the Pyrenees are part of an offering closely linked to the destination.

Michelin also knows Canfranc for its cuisine. The complex is home to Canfranc Express, the restaurant housed in a former railway carriage that holds a Michelin Star. The station therefore brings together two different distinctions from the guide: one for its hotel offering and another for its gastronomy.

The addition of La Torre del Visco thus completes Aragon's Michelin Keys map for 2026 alongside Torre del Marqués and Canfranc Estación, with one establishment from the region in each of the three categories.
