These works had been scheduled for the summer, but municipalities and businesses in Reino de Mallos expressed concern about the damage they could cause to tourism. These concerns were addressed at a meeting between the Government of Aragon, the Huesca Provincial Council, the tourism sector and the affected communities, where a work schedule and a monitoring committee were established.
The works that began Monday are focused on viaduct No. 11. The director general of Roads and Infrastructure, Miguel Ángel Arminio, explained that its width will be increased from five meters to nine and a half meters. To do so, the existing pavement and the bridge’s upper structure will be removed, and new foundations will be prepared to support the new deck.
Arminio said that establishing an alternative detour at nearby points around the bridge had been considered, “but the geographical conditions and the scale of the work required to create this temporary detour meant it could not be done safely.” For this reason, the alternative route has been established via the A-1205 road and the A-23 motorway. “They obviously require traveling more kilometers, but they are the safest option,” he said.
