The Month International Tourism Soared in Zaragoza: Here’s Why

August was an especially strong month for international tourism in Zaragoza. The approach of the total solar eclipse on August 12 coincided with a significant increase in foreign visitors staying in the city’s hotels, with international arrivals up 11.22% and overnight stays rising 12.08% compared with the same month in 2025. The astronomical event also had a visible impact on hotel occupancy, which came close to 100% on August 10 and 11 and, especially, on the day of the eclipse. During those dates, accommodation prices rose to approximately five times their level on the days immediately before and after.
The Month International Tourism Soared in Zaragoza: Here’s Why

August’s boost helped Zaragoza achieve its best tourism figures for the January-to-August period since the statistical series began in 2022. In the first eight months of 2026, the Aragonese capital recorded 865.576 travelers and 1.500.491 overnight stays in hotels, tourist apartments and campsites. The number of stays exceeded 1.5 million for the first time during this period, although growth compared with 2025 was moderate: 0.10% more travelers and 0.01% more overnight stays.

Specifically, August ended with 142.180 travelers, 4.55% more than a year earlier, and 222.560 overnight stays, up 1.75%. Average hotel occupancy also improved in the year-to-date figures, reaching 56.77% by bed capacity, compared with 53.99% between January and August 2025, while room occupancy stood at 71.17%. The figures reflect the impact major events can have on the city’s tourism activity, especially when they concentrate demand on specific dates.

DOMESTIC TOURISM, ZARAGOZA’S MAIN MARKET

Despite the international rebound recorded in August, Spanish travelers continue to account for most of Zaragoza’s tourism. Between January and August, 607.183 domestic visitors arrived, 1.06% more than in the same period a year earlier, generating 1.016.736 overnight stays, up 2.04%. Overall, the domestic market accounts for 70% of travelers and 68% of cumulative stays. Catalonia, with 123.641 travelers, and Madrid, with 120.922, lead the source markets, followed by Aragon, the Valencian Community and Andalusia.

Internationally, France remains the visitors’ main country of origin, followed by Italy and the United States. The increase in foreign travelers in August stood out against the more modest trend for the year as a whole and coincided with the solar eclipse, which placed Zaragoza among the destinations of interest for those wishing to observe the phenomenon. Hotel occupancy levels close to full capacity during those days highlight the concentration of demand around the astronomical event.

By type of accommodation, tourist apartments recorded the highest percentage growth between January and August, with 43.068 travelers, up 44.92%, and 120.735 overnight stays, an increase of 8.15%. Campsites also improved their figures, with 55.420 stays, up 6.84%. Hotels, meanwhile, continue to account for most of the activity, with 792.284 travelers and 1.324.336 overnight stays in the first eight months of 2026.
