Two decades after opening, the Zuera International Circuit is taking stock of a history shaped by the presence of major national, European and world championships, as well as by the hundreds of drivers who have passed through its facilities. Among them are numerous figures who later reached the international elite of motorsport.
Over the past 20 years, the circuit has hosted two FIA world championships, as well as various European championships and top-level events, including the Spanish Karting Championship and other major international meetings. This track record has established Zuera as a leading facility for drivers, teams and industry professionals.
NEW ERA
The anniversary has not been conceived solely as a celebration of the circuit's history, but also as the starting point for a new era defined by modernization, technology and expanded sporting possibilities.
The Zuera International Circuit has carried out major work on its facilities, including new asphalt and new corners and track layouts designed to adapt to the latest trends in karting and allow a wider range of disciplines to be held.
One of the main new features is the possibility of using slower and more technical track configurations, while retaining the characteristics that have made the circuit fast and demanding. These layouts will enable the addition of new competition formats, including endurance races with four-stroke karts, thereby expanding the circuit's sporting offering.
The renovation also includes a major investment in technology. There are now 42 state-of-the-art cameras for monitoring the track, along with a new timing system designed to meet the demands of today's competitions.
These improvements are complemented by a high-performance lighting system, designed to match the standards of major Eastern circuits and presented as a unique facility in Europe within its field.
MORE THAN A TRACK
The renovation has also extended to the areas intended for teams, professionals and fans. The project includes improvements to services such as the cafeteria, restrooms and various rooms and communal spaces.
“A race is not just about the drivers. There are teams, mechanics, the press, organizers and so many people who make each competition possible. We wanted to carry out a genuine renewal plan so that all of them would find facilities in Zuera worthy of the major events we host,” Iván Moar, CEO of the Zuera International Circuit, said during the event.
The aim is for the renovation to enable the circuit to face the next 20 years with a facility prepared for the evolving needs of motorsport and capable of continuing to attract top-level competitions.
FROM ZUERA TO THE ELITE
The circuit's history is closely linked to the development of many drivers who have gone on to reach the most important categories of international motorsport.
Those who have raced at Zuera include Max Verstappen, Lando Norris, Carlos Sainz and Kimi Antonelli, among many other drivers who used the Aragonese track during their formative and competitive years.
One of the most notable examples is Kimi Antonelli, the current Formula 1 driver, who was crowned European champion at Zuera in 2021. His career represents the link between the Aragonese circuit and the development of drivers who later progress to motorsport's top category.
The continued presence of international drivers and teams over these two decades has turned the Zuera International Circuit into a global reference point in karting and one of the regular venues for those seeking to compete at the highest level.
AN ANNIVERSARY LOOKING AHEAD
The 20th-anniversary event included the presentation of a documentary about the circuit's history, a video dedicated to the new facilities and their features, the traditional ribbon-cutting ceremony and a cocktail reception with guests and representatives connected to Aragon and the track's history.
With this renovation, the Zuera International Circuit is entering a new era with the aim of continuing to grow, attracting new high-level competitions and expanding the disciplines that can be held at its facilities.
Twenty years after its creation, Zuera is not only celebrating what it has achieved. The 20th anniversary marks the beginning of the next 20 years.
