The letter was signed by Iniciativa por Palestina, which launched the movement; CUT, Acción Libertaria, Ecologistas en acción Zaragoza, PCPE Aragón, Sobrarbe por Palestina, Coliche, Anticapitalistas Aragón, Huesca con Palestina, MHUEL, Altoaragón con Palestina and TAJO.
The letter does not explicitly mention the player's name, although it is obvious who it refers to. It is true that Garzon publicly took a position in support of her country in the past, in 2023, but since then she has not made any further public statements about her country's politics.
THE TEXT OF THE LETTER
"The undersigned organizations are addressing you through this letter to express our deep concern, as well as the discontent of a large part of the fan base, at the recent decision to add to your roster a player who publicly takes pride in a state that is currently perpetrating genocide," the letter begins.
The letter argues that "systematic violations against human life cannot go unpunished, much less through a platform as influential as sport. It is unacceptable that our city and our club should welcome with open arms a person who proclaims her national pride in a country that systematically and indiscriminately bombs hospitals, schools, universities and even other athletes."
"This is not about condemning a person for being Israeli; it is about condemning and not wanting the Casademont Zaragoza team to be used as a platform to promote an apology for the Palestinian genocide. Moreover, Casademont Zaragoza's women's team takes pride in its values, and this player's views are completely contrary to them," the letter continues.
The final section of the letter calls on the club's management to engage in deep reflection: "If this management truly cares about basketball, the civic values that this sport should convey and respect for its own fan base, it should immediately reconsider this decision and do without people who, through their public positions, endorse those who endanger human integrity in such an atrocious manner."
