For Germany, the only player to put up much of a fight was former Zaragoza player Leonie Fiebich, who scored 13 points by relying on her individual quality and added 6 rebounds. She was one of the few bright spots for a German team that produced a very poor showing, especially as World Cup hosts.
The game had little drama because Spain maintained a ferocious defense against the hosts, limiting them to just 26 points in the entire first half, while Méndez's team reached 50 thanks to 9 of 18 three-pointers. That lead had practically settled the outcome before halftime in a game in which the national team took a giant step forward, showing that they are genuine title contenders.
With this result, Spain sits atop the group, followed by Japan, featuring former Zaragoza player Stephanie Mawuli, who defeated Mali in the group's other game. Miguel Méndez's team will have little time to rest, as they face Mali this Saturday at 11:30 a.m. A victory would practically secure top spot for Spain and send them directly into the knockout stage.
