During the day on Sunday, September 13, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and from 4:30 to 8:00 p.m., nine athletes from ASPACE Aragón will demonstrate how boccia is played and invite visitors to try it, learn its rules and experience the precision, concentration and strategy required for every throw. The event joins the many sporting activities that will turn Plaza del Pilar into a large space for practicing and discovering different disciplines throughout the weekend. Participation is free and open to everyone.
A TEAM WITH EXPERIENCE IN AND OUTSIDE ARAGÓN
The Aspace Aragón Sports Association team will be represented by Joaquín Villena (BC1), Carlos Grasa (BC3), Óscar Alijarde (BC1), Viky Romeo (BC1), María Granados (BC3), Virginia Navarro (BC3), África Sevilla (BC3), Marc Moya (BC1) and José Gracia (BC1). Joaquín Villena was crowned Aragón boccia champion in the BC1 category this season and qualified for the national championships.
Taking part in Street Sports Day gives the team an opportunity to bring boccia out of competition venues and into the city center, showcasing both its sporting dimension and the opportunities it offers for participation by people with significant support needs.
A SPORT IN WHICH EVERY DECISION COUNTS
Boccia is a Paralympic precision and strategy sport specially adapted for people with cerebral palsy and other disabilities involving severe motor impairment. Depending on the category, athletes can make their throws directly by hand or use a ramp with the assistance of another person.
Behind every ball lie calculation, technique and the ability to anticipate an opponent's move. Practicing the sport helps develop motor, cognitive and social skills while also promoting autonomy, decision-making and teamwork.
At Fundación Aspace Zaragoza, boccia has been practiced since 1995 and, through the Aspace Aragón Sports Association, its players regularly compete in regional competitions and national championships.
