Real Zaragoza

“The team’s ceiling is even higher,” says Real Zaragoza’s optimistic first captain

Ander Herrera is optimistic about Real Zaragoza. The first captain believes the team has managed to reverse the negative atmosphere surrounding the club in previous seasons and reconnect with a fan base that once again identifies with what it sees on the pitch. However, as he said at a press conference, this is only the beginning: “It isn’t easy to change the dynamic as we have done over these three or four months, but I believe the club’s ceiling and the team’s ceiling are still higher.”

The footballer explained that his confidence is not solely down to his naturally optimistic character, but also to what he sees every day in the work of a group that is creating positive vibes. "I am positive because I like what I see day to day. I wasn't here last year, but what reached me was nothing but negativity and pessimism. I think that together we have managed to make an effort and try to completely eradicate that negativity and pessimism and turn things around," the midfielder stressed.

In this way, Ander has also highlighted the team's collective progress. Real Zaragoza have gone ten games unbeaten, have become a difficult opponent for anyone and are "on an upward trajectory." "We are a team that conveys something, knows how it wants to play, is difficult to beat and is respected by other teams not only because of Real Zaragoza's name and history, but also because of our results and the way we play," Herrera explained.

"We are one of the teams, if not the team, in which the players who come from outside contribute the most. I always tell the players who do not start matches that what matters is that they can play an important role as the game develops," the first captain stressed. Despite the positive progress, the midfielder believes there are still areas to improve, such as becoming more effective in the final third.

HUESCA, A DIRECT PROMOTION RIVAL

Real Zaragoza's next challenge will be this Saturday's Aragonese derby against Huesca at Ibercaja Estadio. "It is a very special day for the autonomous community. I believe there is a lot of talent in Aragon, and there are people doing things very well for sport. Hopefully, from now on, there can be derbies in higher divisions," Herrera stressed, recalling his last match against Huesca, which he described as "unbeatable." It took place during the 2008/2009 season at El Alcoraz, where he scored a decisive goal.

Against this backdrop, the midfielder does not expect an easy game and considers Huesca one of the teams that will eventually fight for promotion places. "Sooner or later, Huesca will be among those six or seven teams fighting for direct promotion and playoff places," Herrera warned of "a dangerous opponent" that "will come here to take the ball from us and try to win the match through possession."
