The heat of recent days will ease across much of Spain. According to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), the passage of a front and the arrival of colder air will cause a sharp drop in temperatures across the northern half of the country, with falls of more than 10 degrees in some areas and local differences of around 13 degrees compared with the previous day.
The change will be particularly noticeable in the Ebro Valley and areas of northern mainland Spain, where maximum temperatures will be well below those recorded in previous days.
SEVERE STORMS IN THE EAST
Instability will be the other main feature. Aemet is forecasting heavy or very heavy showers and storms in eastern mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands, especially during the second half of the day.
The most intense weather could affect Aragon, Catalonia, the Valencian Community, the Balearic Islands and nearby areas, with intense rain, frequent lightning, strong wind gusts and the possibility of hail.
In areas around Teruel and the Iberian System, storms could produce hailstones measuring between 2 and 4 centimeters, while locally heavy and persistent rainfall is also expected in parts of the Catalan Pyrenees.
HEAT CONTINUES IN THE SOUTH
The temperature drop will not be equally intense across Spain. Temperatures could still exceed 35 degrees in parts of Extremadura, Castilla-La Mancha and inland Andalusia, while maximum temperatures in parts of the Mediterranean coast and the Balearic Islands will be around 32-34 degrees.
Wind will also become a significant factor, with potentially very strong cierzo gusts in the Ebro Valley and tramontana winds in the Ampurdan.
After this abrupt change, the forecast points to a gradual stabilization of the weather, although some showers and storms may still occur. Temperatures will subsequently tend to recover across much of the country.
