Meanwhile, Spain is facing a Tuesday still marked by high temperatures and stable conditions across much of the country. Thermometers will exceed 35 degrees across large areas and may top 40 degrees in the Guadalquivir, Valencia and Gran Canaria. However, the arrival of a front will bring locally heavy and persistent rainfall to Galicia and the western Cantabrian area, as well as a notable drop in maximum temperatures in Galicia.
Stable conditions will prevail across most of the country, with lightly cloudy or clear skies. The outlook will be different in the northwest, where the front will bring cloudy or overcast skies and rainfall. Maximum temperatures will fall by more than 6 degrees in Galicia.
Low cloud will develop in the Balearic Islands, the Alborón Sea and the Strait of Gibraltar. In the afternoon, convective clouds will build over the mountains of central, southern and eastern mainland Spain, potentially bringing isolated showers or thunderstorms to the lower Ebro and the Pyrenees. In the Canary Islands, skies will be mostly lightly cloudy or clear, with some cloudy intervals in northern areas of the westernmost islands.
FOG AND CALIMA
Morning fog banks are likely in Galicia, the Cantabrian region, the upper Ebro, the northern plateau and the Balearic Islands. Coastal mist is also expected in the Strait of Gibraltar and the Alborón Sea.
Calima will continue in the Canary Islands and, to a lesser extent, in southern mainland Spain.
Temperatures will still remain high for this time of year across large parts of the country, although falls will predominate. The declines will be more pronounced in western mainland Spain and, especially, in Galicia, where maximum temperatures will drop notably. There will be little change in the eastern third, while temperatures will rise in the Canary Islands.
MORE THAN 40 DEGREES AND TROPICAL NIGHTS
Thermometers will exceed 35 degrees this Tuesday across large areas of the archipelagos, the southern half and northeastern mainland Spain. They will even surpass 40 degrees in the Guadalquivir, Valencia and Gran Canaria.
Tropical nights will also continue, with minimum temperatures above 20 degrees across large areas of the southern half and northeastern mainland Spain. Along the Mediterranean coasts and in the Canary Islands, they will remain above 25 degrees.
Light westerly winds will prevail across mainland Spain. After the front passes, winds will be moderate and northerly in the northern third. The cierzo will develop in the Ebro Valley, with very strong gusts possible. In the Balearic Islands and the Mediterranean, winds will be southerly, while moderate trade winds will blow in the Canary Islands.
Among the provincial capitals with the highest temperatures will be Córdoba, Murcia, Seville and Zaragoza, all with maximums of 39 degrees. Lleida will reach 38, while Albacete, Badajoz, Girona, Granada, Jaén and Toledo will reach 37 degrees. Huesca and Teruel will record maximum temperatures of 36 degrees.
WEATHER CHANGE INTENSIFIES ON WEDNESDAY
The front will increase instability this Wednesday in the northern third, with light or moderate rainfall in the Cantabrian region, the northern plateau, La Rioja and the Central System. Catalonia will see heavy or very heavy showers and thunderstorms accompanied by hail, which will spread in the afternoon to the Balearic Islands, the southeast of mainland Spain and, to a lesser extent, the southern Iberian System.
Maximum temperatures will fall across the board, with declines of more than 6 degrees and over 10 degrees across large areas of the northeast of mainland Spain. Temperatures will exceed 35 degrees only in parts of the Guadalquivir, the Alborón Sea, Murcia and the Canary Islands. Minimum temperatures will also fall, notably in the Iberian System and the Pyrenees, although tropical nights will continue in southern mainland Spain and the Mediterranean, with temperatures even reaching 25 degrees in parts of the Canary Islands.
Winds will be northerly across almost all of mainland Spain, light or moderate, with very strong gusts of cierzo likely in the Ebro Valley and tramontana in the Ampurdán and the Balearic Islands. Westerly winds will blow in the south and the Alborán Sea, while trade winds will affect the Canary Islands, with occasional strong intervals in exposed areas.
