Zaragoza Whitewater Course Reopens in Grand Style with International Sporting Event

Zaragoza’s Whitewater Course will reopen after years out of use since it was created for Expo 2008. The city council has invested a total of €180,000 in its relaunch, which will be marked by the Aragon Championship and Zaragoza Open in Olympic Slalom, the Slalom Short Open and the third Rafting Sprint event of the Aragon Rafting League’s ‘Aragon Tourism Grand Prix’ from November 14 to 15.

This municipal investment is joined by a commitment from the concessionaire to allocate €530,000 to various initiatives linked to reopening the facility and its associated spaces. These include the purchase of boats and equipment for whitewater and flatwater navigation, as well as renovations to the lower levels of the Water Tower and the boathouse kiosk.

Sports councillor Félix Brocate stressed the importance of reopening the course. "Years ago, people told me it was impossible, but at last this facility is returning to an activity that was needed," he said.

THE COMPETITION

The sporting event already has 442 registered athletes and 378 boats, representing 26 clubs from eight autonomous communities (Madrid, Catalonia, Castile and León, Galicia, Asturias, the Basque Country, Navarre and Aragon) and Portugal. The schedule will feature different canoeing and rafting disciplines over three days, with free training on Friday, November 13, from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., and on Saturday, November 14, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:45 a.m., before the official competitions begin.

The third Rafting Sprint event of the Aragon Rafting League's 'Aragon Tourism Grand Prix' will open the competition on Saturday at noon. The event will use a head-to-head format, with teams facing each other over a 350-meter course in R4 boats with four members. That same day, from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., the Zaragoza Slalom Short Open will be held, a fast and technical event over a course of between 80 and 120 meters in the individual K1 kayak and C1 canoe categories.

On Sunday, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., it will be time for the Aragon Championship and Zaragoza Open in Olympic Slalom, the main event of the weekend. Participants will tackle a technical course of around 200 meters with up to 25 gates, which they must clear while following the designated route.
