Don Quixote Returns to Mercado with Plenty of Humor and Music: The Stories Cervantes Left Untold

What happened to the characters in Don Quixote who were eager to tell their own stories? What if Cervantes had left some adventures out of his famous novel? These are some of the questions inspiring "The Complete Leftovers of Don Quixote," a comedy coming to Zaragoza’s Teatro del Mercado from November 5 to 8, bringing back the universe of Spain’s most famous literary knight with irony and live music.

Behind this unusual production is Aragonese actor and writer José Luis Esteban, who wrote the script and performs it, accompanied by musician Naiel Ibarrola, who will provide the original live soundtrack. Together, they form the creative project "The Complete Leftovers," through which they seek to approach the great classics of literature from a perspective that is entertaining, irreverent and also moving.

"We love playing with the classics and turning them into comedy," explains the actor and playwright from Zaragoza, who is taking on this premiere after his show "The Odyssey," a candidate for Best Breakthrough Production at the 2024 Max Theatre Awards. Now, the duo swaps the Greek hero’s journeys for the adventures of the ingenious gentleman from La Mancha.

THE DON QUIXOTE CHARACTERS WHO ALSO WANT TO TELL THEIR STORY

The play is based on an idea that is both simple and original: giving a voice to those who believe Cervantes did not pay them enough attention. Characters who remained in the background return to share their own versions of events and claim the prominence they believe they deserve.

Among them are Dulcinea, who has plenty to say about her endless wait; Rocinante, ready to recount his particular abandonment; and Avellaneda, the author of the well-known apocryphal Don Quixote, whose story also finds a place in this humorous reinterpretation.

The production also features a comedian convinced that he is Don Quixote himself and Andrés, the young man who suffered the consequences of one of the knight’s encounters with some muleteers. They all form part of a show that imagines what might have happened if the characters had been able to complete the unfinished stories.

The play marks another encounter between José Luis Esteban and Naiel Ibarrola and the great texts of world literature, following their experience with The Odyssey.

DATES AND TIMES

The performances will take place from November 5 to 7 at 8:00 p.m. and on November 8 at 7:00 p.m. Tickets cost 20 euros.
