Among the biggest price differences compared with a year ago are fresh berries, a category that includes strawberries, wild strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, blackberries and currants. Their price has risen 35.7% compared with August 2025. Citrus fruits, such as oranges, lemons and mandarins, have also become considerably more expensive, now costing 17.1% more.

EGGS, LEGUMES AND FISH ALSO RISE IN PRICE

Household budgets are also feeling the increase in the price of products commonly bought in many homes. Fresh green legumes, including green beans, peas and broad beans, have become 15.9% more expensive in twelve months, while eggs cost 12.5% more than a year ago.

Fish has also not escaped the price increases. Fresh, chilled or frozen fish has risen 7.8% year on year. Other seafood products are also more expensive, including dried, salted or smoked fish (+5.7%) and prepared shellfish, whose price has increased by 5.5%.

NOT EVERYTHING IN THE SHOPPING BASKET IS RISING IN PRICE

Alongside these increases, other foods now cost less than they did twelve months ago. Coffee and coffee substitutes have fallen by 4.2%, while sugar has dropped 3.1% and cereals 3%. Frozen vegetables and tubers have also become cheaper (-2.8%), as have some fresh fruits, such as stone and pome fruits (-2.6%).

GREEN BEANS AND PEAS RISE 19% IN JUST ONE MONTH

The changes are even more striking when August is compared only with July. In just one month, green legumes rose 19.1%, making them one of the products with the sharpest increases. By contrast, tropical fruits fell 9.9% and citrus fruits 6.1%. Overall, food and non-alcoholic beverages recorded an annual increase of 2.3% in August, according to Spain's National Statistics Institute (INE).
