During the meeting, the parties discussed the operation of the agreement signed in June 2025 and in force since September of the same year, which allows Agroseguro to directly deduct the regional subsidy from the farmer’s or rancher’s premium when the policy is taken out. As a result, the policyholder pays only their share at that time, namely the total premium minus the applicable subsidy.
This system eliminates administrative procedures for sector professionals and reduces their initial outlay, an especially relevant factor in encouraging the uptake of agricultural insurance. Under the agreement, Agroseguro is responsible for calculating the regional subsidy, applying it when the policy is taken out and subsequently claiming payment from the Government of Aragón, without policyholders having to complete any procedures.
The budget allocated by the Government of Aragón in 2026 to subsidize agricultural insurance premiums amounts to 12 million euros.
The meeting also served to assess the development of agricultural insurance coverage in Aragón. According to Agroseguro data, 33,700 insurance policies were taken out in the region in 2025, the latest completed year, 9% more than in 2024. Premiums reached 103.35 million euros, up 4.75%, exceeding 100 million euros for the first time in the 46-year history of agricultural insurance in Aragón.
Regarding claims, Agroseguro reported that the 2021-2025 period was particularly challenging in Aragón, with claims exceeding premiums in four of the five years. During that period, Agroseguro and the insurance companies participating in the Combined Agricultural Insurance system paid 454 million euros in compensation to offset losses in Aragón’s agricultural and livestock sector.
In 2026, estimated compensation in Aragón for losses recorded through August 31 has already exceeded 50 million euros, with approximately 130,000 hectares reported as affected. The main weather events this year include storms, with hail, rain and wind damage leading to claims being filed for nearly 57,000 hectares of insured crops. Damage caused by drought, wildlife and fires has also been recorded.
