Zaragoza’s Stone Bridge to close this Wednesday for drone flights: times and bus diversions

Zaragoza’s Stone Bridge will close to road and pedestrian traffic this Wednesday, October 21, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. for drone surveys postponed in late September. Nearby areas will also be affected for safety reasons, and alternative routes are recommended for crossing the Ebro.

The operation will require changes to the routes of five urban bus lines: 28, 32, 35, 36 and 39. Lines 28, 32, 35 and 39, coming from Sobrarbe and Avenida de Cataluña and Balcón de San Lázaro, will run via Paseo de la Ribera, Arquitecto La Figuera, Avenida de los Pirineos and Santiago Bridge, before continuing along Echegaray y Caballero to Don Jaime. In addition, lines 28 and 39 will maintain their diversion via Echegaray because of the closure of Plaza de San Miguel.

Line 36, coming from San Juan de la Peña, will be diverted via Valle de Zuriza, Muel and Avenida del Puente del Pilar, cross Iron Bridge and continue along Echegaray y Caballero. During the operation, the Sobrarbe 55 and Sobrarbe 3 stops, both served by this line, will be suspended. The closure is scheduled to last seven hours, although the restriction will be linked to the actual flight periods.

DRONES WILL SUPPORT FUTURE BRIDGE REHABILITATION

The work is part of Zaragoza City Council’s Bridge Plan and will produce a three-dimensional digital model of this historic structure using LiDAR technology and high-definition cameras. With this data, technicians will be able to examine the condition of the stone in detail and identify possible damage, such as cracks, deterioration of the masonry, erosion or falling pieces.

The analysis will be used to prepare the preliminary project for the bridge’s comprehensive rehabilitation. The task has been awarded to Bigantec Consultoría for 40,197.41 euros, including VAT, with a four-month completion period. The initial estimate for future repair work is approximately 750,000 euros, although the specific measures will be defined based on the technical studies.

The project must take into account the bridge’s heritage protection status, as it is listed as an Asset of Cultural Interest, as well as mobility during the future works and improvements to its lighting. It will also include measures to protect the nests of common swifts and pallid swifts, two protected species that inhabit cracks in the stone blocks.
